Helen Lederer is instantly recognisable as one of Britain’s best known comedy character actresses. She is also known for her unique brand of wit and observational humour which are reflected in both her writing and presenting work.
From “Cruising down the Nile” for Granada TV to co hosting “Wogan”, life shots at the BBC Food Show Birmingham NEC and International Wine Fair EXCEL to presenting a ”Blue Peter” special or presenting strands for BBC’s “Heaven and Earth Show”, Helen’s ease with the camera and interest in people shows her adaptability and warmth – no matter what subject is thrown at her! Presenting the cookery programme “Butterfingers” for TASTE CFN received record viewing figures. Presenting Radio 5’s “Comic Cuts” including interviews with fellow comics – Ruby Wax and Harry Enfield - not to mention being a regular columnist for Radio 4 “Woman’s Hour” and a fun guest on “Ready Steady Cook” with slots at the BBC Food Show with chefs including Nick Nairn. Helen has also presented a series of musical concerts at the Wigmore Hall for young people.
Helen won the BBC’s celebrity “Ready Steady Cook” as well as recording live slots at the BBC Food Show Birmingham and the International Wine Fair, two reports “Dousing & Divining Retreat Ten Steps” to “Fashion Freedom” for “The Heaven and Earth Show”, “BBC Breakfast”, “Here’s One I Made Earlier” - (A celebration of Blue Peter), Co-host with ”Wogan”, “Computing for the Terrified”, “The Really Useful Guide to Alcohol”, “Going for a Song” (Team Captain), ”P’s and Q’s” and “Ruby Wax Dinner Guest”. For ITV Helen has worked on programmes such as “Falling in Love Again”(Anglia),”This Morning” (Granada), ”Cyber Café” (Meridian) and for B Sky B “Lorraine on Sky”, “Butterfingers” for Taste CFN and “Scrabble” for Challenge TV.
Radio work includes being the presenter of “Home Truths” for Radio 4, working as a regular columnist on “Woman’s Hour”, a regular reviewer on “Open Book” working on “BBC Comic Cuts” with fellow comics including Ruby Wax and Harry Enfield and being a team captain with Jeremy Hardy on “Wow Fab Groovy”. “Kaleidoscope”, “Excess Baggage”, “Fourth Column”, “Treasure Island”, “Devils Advocate”, “Mid Week” , “Booked”, “Say the Word”, two series of “Life with Lederer”, “All Change”, “Consuming Passions” and “Speaking Volumes” are just some of the copious radio programmes which have experienced Helen’s talents. Radio Drama productions include “City of Ladies”, “A Higher Education” lead opposite Rik Mayall, “Easter Week” by Sarah Maitland and “Short Story Readings” for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3. Helen has also take part on various radio shows as a panellist including for “The News Quiz”, “Room 101”, “Just a Minute”, “Say the Word” and “Wireless Wise”.
During her impressive career Helen has embarked on many corporate projects the highlights being Telephone Management with John Cleese, and The Complete Cruise Solution for P. and O.
From Helen’s early days at the famous Comedy Store to creating the ‘Girl at the Bar’ in BBC 2’s “Naked Video”, not to mention becoming ‘Catriona’ the dizzy journalist in BBC 1’s “Absolutely Fabulous” – Helen has starred in most top TV and Radio shows. She has also followed on the heels of the great Julie Walters by playing 'Rita' in “Educating Rita” and spending 5 months treading the boards at the Comedy Theatre, West End in Alan Bleasdale’s“Having a Ball”. More recently Helen has starred in the “Vagina Monologues” in the West End, John Mortimer’s“Full House” and Eugene Lonesco’s“The Hairless Diva” at the Palace Theatre, Watford. Other television acting work includes “One Foot in the Grave”, “Bottom”, “French and Saunders”, “The Harry Enfield Television Programme”, “Happy Families” written by Ben Elton,“Casualty”, “Bridget Jones Night Special”, “The Ruby Wax Show”, “Hello Mum”, “Paul Merton Show”, “Filthy Rich and Cat Flap”, “Comedian Special Celebrity Weakest Link”, “Friday Night with Wogan”, ”The New Statesman”, “Just a Minute”, “Saturday Night Live”, “Girl’s On Top”, “The Baldy Man”, “The Refuge”, “Little Ammadillos”, “The Jack Dee Show”, “A Word in your Era”, “Just for Laughs”, and an “Election Special”. Helen’s theatre credits are varied including “Full House” by John Mortimer, “The Hairless Diva” by Eugene Lonesco, translated by John Mortimer, “V Day Gala Performance” at the Royal Albert Hall, “Vagina Monologues”, “House of Blue Leaves”, “Educating Rita” playing the role of Rita, “Having a Ball”, “Take a Chance on Me” as well as writing and starring in “Still Crazy After All These Years” and “Finger Food” which both toured and performed at the Edinburgh Festival.
Film roles include “Fat Slags”, “Solitaire for Two”, “Dance for your Daddy” and “Clark”.
Helen has also undertaken numerous voices for commercial and the narration of children’s cds/tapes including Roald Dahl and Jacqueline Wilson and adult books by Wendy Holden. Television voiceover work includes “Modern Times” and “Making ‘Alexander’” for BBC 2, “Big Day Out” and “Norland Nannies” for Granada and “The Pony Club” for channel 4
Having established herself as one of Britain’s best known writer/comediennes in the 80’s Helen was soon commissioned by Hodder and Stoughton to write “Single Minding” and later by Penguin to write her first novel. Several commissions for BBC Radio (“All Change” making “Pick of the Week”) and a commission for BBC TV to write a sitcom, sits well with her regular articles and columns on all manor of subjects from wine to property to travel in The Independent On Sunday, The Mail on Sunday, The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, SHE Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Woman & Home, EVE, Wedding Day, Sunday Express, Reviewer and Humour, The Scotsman, and many others. She is also a regular reviewer on BBC’s Open Book programme and YOU Magazine’s Book Club as well as having a regular column on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. Her short stores have been published in The Express and “Girls Night In” (Harper Collins). Novel and Short Story titles include “Girls Night In” and “Girls Night Out” Harper Collins, short stories for “New Erotica”, Mammouth Press, “Coping with Helen Lederer” and short story “Voices off” for Saturday Express Magazine. Current novels in development are “Pearshaped” and “Spoof Anthology”.
Helen also works tirelessly for many charities and is an Ambassador for the Prince’s Trust.
